Britney Spears: To Bomb Or Not To Bomb?

What a difference a year makes. At the 2007 VMAs, Britney Spears opening act was so sad that it was hard to imagine she’d ever get another shot at a nationally televised live performance again. But MTV recently announced that Brit will open the show again this year in a “fun and unexpected” way — albeit probably not with a performance.

This was a smart move by MTV. Many of the millions who followed her very public breakdown in the tabloids may tune in tonight to see what they’re hoping will be her comeback. And Scandalist is happy to report that a successful comeback is a real possibility: A source close to Britney revealed to us that she was in the studio practicing for her opening act last night at 10pm. She’s also reportedly been spending a lot of time at the gym getting back into shape. Last year (pictured at left), Britney was out partying the night before the VMAs. Of course, Britney isn’t just opening the 2008 VMAs — she’s also up for Pop Video of the Year for “Piece of Me.”

In just a few hours, we’ll see whether all of her hard work has paid off.
