Sunshine-Free K.C. Flops On Idol

When Idol’s Disco Week was announced, there was some confusion as to whether Harry Wayne Casey—you may know him as K.C. of K.C. & The Sunshine Band—would be a mentor or just a performer. We can think of a few good reasons KC didn’t give his two cents on Tuesday.
- Clips of Quentin Tarantino shaking his fist at contestants might be why Movie Week took so long despite the “only two judges speak” experiment.
- While most of the songs were disco, only Lil Rounds did a disco version. KC would have felt shunned.
- Did you hear that dude’s voice last night? OMG.
Ok, that last reason doesn’t hold up. Tarantino’s no great shakes vocally, and they still let a portly and poorly dressed KC end the otherwise enjoyable “disco medley.” Why did they let this guy get out from behind his keyboard? Judging from some clips we found, he’s never been much of a live singer.
Even in 1974, all that running in place kept K.C. from being much more vocally than an energetic aerobics instructor. But check out the band!
And here’s the same song being performed in Brazil last March. If you thought last night’s dancing was embarassing…check this out.
With the contestants refusing to do the genre straight, maybe they should cancel Disco Week from now on—unless the Village People are available to mentor.
