M.J.’s Memorial: Most Beautiful Ever?

Our headline may sound a little over the top, but is it really? A crowd of around 17,000 Michael Jackson fans who were packed into L.A.’s Staples Center — plus an estimated billion people watching worldwide on live television — were given the show of a lifetime today. The event is already being billed as the first worldwide memorial service. Some highlights:

  • We watched Michael Jackson’s casket, gold-plated and covered in red flowers, being carried into the Staples Center and placed in front of the stage. (Watch the clip above and the whole M.J. memorial at VH1.)
  • We listened to Queen Latifah read a touching poem by Maya Angelou.
  • We listened to basketball great Magic Johnson talk about the “greatest moment” of his life: Eating a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken with Michael Jackson. (We never knew the Gloved One was so, um, average.)
  • We watched Brooke Shields, who struggled to speak through tears, say that Michael Jackson was “pure, non-jaded and a lover of life.” Rumored to have dated Jackson in the 80s, Brooke described becoming friends with the King of Pop when she was 13 years old and how the two bonded over being child stars.
  • We listened to Smokey Robinson, who wrote several songs made famous by Michael, read condolences from both Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela.
  • We watched Motown founder Berry Gordy say that Michael Jackson was “the greatest entertainer that ever lived.”
  • We watched a heartfelt, soulful rendition of “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” by Stevie Wonder, who proclaimed that he wished he “hadn’t lived to see this day.” We watched riveting performances by Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Hudson.
  • We also watched Usher’s performance of “Gone Too Soon” (co-written by M.J. himself) start off shaky with a gasp for air and end in tears.
  • We listened as the Rev. Al Sharpton addressed Michael’s kids directly, saying: “Wasn’t nothing strange about your dad, it was strange with what your daddy had to deal with.” We’re not sure about that one, but we’ll let it pass.
  • We watched a stage full of celebrities and children sing “We Are the World,” the song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985 and used to help fight famine in Africa.
  • We watched Michael Jackson’s weeping little daughter, Paris, say that that “daddy has been the best father that you can ever imagine and I just want to say that I love him so much” — easily the saddest moment of the day. Ugh. (Watch Paris Jackson speak here).
  • And we watched Michael’s big brother, Jermaine Jackson, sing and cry at the same time, which looked like a difficult feat to us.

Then again, we shed a tear or two while blogging — and that’s not easy to do, either.

American Idol: The Curse Of The Runner-Ups

adam lambert vs. kris allen

Whether Kris Allen or Adam Lambert wins, they’re both going to be big stars, right? Just like Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. Like the Davids Cook and Archuleta. Like Kelly Clarkson and…Justin Guarini? More often than not, the runner-up on the show doesn’t wind up being the second biggest star. For all we know,  Jason Castro’s upcoming album could blow Archuleta’s out of the water. Stranger things have happened—like Constantine Mouralis getting a Tony nomination.

Check out the gallery to see why—even if the winner has to sing to sing the cheesy theme song—Allen and Lambert better hope they ace tonight’s show.

J-Hud Wears Most Unflattering Pants On Earth

jennifer_hudson_7

Was André Leon Talley behind this? Jennifer Hudson performed on the Today Show this morning wearing what may very well be the world’s most hideous pants. While “harem” pants may be hot on the runway, they have quite the opposite effect on bodies over 100lbs, creating the illusion of a 6-inch camel toe. Once we were able to avert our attention from her crotch, we heard her announce that she and fiancé David Otunga had officially set a date and tell Matt Lauer he’d receive a secret invitation. She then graciously signed autographs for fans and performed “Spotlight.” We recently reported that Hudson may be pregnant, though that hardly justifies this ill-fitting ensemble.

Jennifer Hudson Speaks Out About Tragic Family Murder

Jennifer Hudson

Double threat Jennifer Hudson is speaking publicly about the tragic murder of her mother, brother and nephew. In an interview with Essence magazine, the Oscar-winner describes herself as “a mama’s baby.”

“I’d go and sleep in her bed until I was 15 years old,” Hudson revealed.

But the singer is not letting her loss hold her back. “The thing that keeps me going is knowing that God is in control,” she says. “I’s like, if he placed me here, then I must be prepared.”

Her fiance David “Punk” Otunga also expressed his unconditional support, saying, “In this time when things seem so uncertain for her, there is certainty in our bond,” Otunga said. “She doesn’t have to worry about losing me. I’m always going to be right here.”  [Photo: FilmMagic]

Jennifer Hudson Proposes Back To David Otunga

j-hud_otunga_engagement_ring

David Otunga proposed to Jennifer Hudson in such a romantic over-the-top way, that the Dreamgirl felt it was only right to do the same - so she proposed to him too!

Jennifer presented David with a 5 carat diamond ring last month personally designed by Hollywood designer Neil Lane.

“Jennifer wanted to give him something really special when she asked David to marry her,” Neil says. “It was very sentimental and romantic…they are really in love.”

Jennifer presented David with a handmade “architectural and geometric” platinum and diamond men’s ring, but the only catch was, she didn’t know his ring size. The couple came back to Neil Lane’s L.A. store to get it resized.

“They were so lovey-dovey and so sweet to each other,” Neil said. “He was very protective of her and they are so in love.”

Jennifer Hudson’s Holliday Surprise

Jennifer Hudson delivered on a promise to her audience in Atlanta on Thursday night and busted out with a surprise duet with the amazing Jennifer Holliday. They sang the Dreamgirls hit And I Am Telling You to an overjoyed audience. After experiencing tragedy last year, Jennifer still thinks of new ways to wow her fans.
